When do you feel at your best? Is it completing a time consuming, mind draining project; winning an election for a presidency; or playing your favorite sport no matter the outcome? Whatever the reason is you feel on top of the world and wish that everyday could be like that forever. For me, I just can’t pick one particular time, but I would have to say that my “best” was the last year of high school.
There are many people out there who loved high school and wish they could go back. I am not one of those people and will most likely never be one of them. I would have to say that I was somewhat an “outcast” at my school because I always looked at the bigger picture in life and thought ahead. Case in point, I am going to college to work in the fashion industry, but majority of my class in going into health care or something business related. Needless to say I got the stares of yea right or no you most likely won’t make it. They don’t know me very well. Because of this it pushed me to focus more on my future and less on trying to get into the “in crowd.” Plus the minor fact that the next year I will be in a college that none of them are attending. It was very gratifying to know that walking across the stage at graduation that I will most likely never see them again.
Besides feeling the relief that I was never going to be in high school again, was all the hard work I put into scholarships. About a month after school started, I started on scholarships even though none of the local ones where available yet. I couldn’t tell you how many I did, just that it was well into the double digits. My classmates thought I was crazy and halfway through the year some even came up to me a said, “What if you don’t get any scholarships? You will have wasted so much of your time for nothing.” Let me just say that fueled my desire even more to prove them wrong. By the time the local scholarships were available I had an idea what to do and how to manage my time to get them done and in on time. When May 15 rolled around, I was excited and nervous at the same time because it was my final day of high school and it was the awards ceremony to find out what scholarships I received. I was on air walking up to the stage when my name was called because of all the hard work paid off and that I was one of the top students in my class to receive the most scholarships. I never wanted that day to end.
Just the feeling of accomplishment is enough to send someone to cloud nine, this is how my senior year felt like. I am a person who loves to get involved in several activities; it helps me with time management. Getting involved and setting goals I plan to accomplish is what I hope to continue on doing college. If I didn’t have goals I want to accomplish or I wasn’t in any clubs I won’t be successful in college. I have high expectations of myself and failure is not an option. If it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to or think it should, I always find away to manipulate it in my favor. People will probably say that I am crazy for having too high of expectations or being busy all that time, but I can’t imagine it any other way. College is what you make of it and I plan to do it my way.
It sounds like college will be the perfect place for you. There are tons of other people here at ISU that love to set high expectations just like you, so you are in way out of place. Just follow what you want to do, not what other people think you should do.
ReplyDeleteIt is really hard not to care what people think. It is one thing to say it and something completely different to do it. All your hard work paid off and I bet you have a lot of jealous classmates.
ReplyDeleteYou should have no problems in college. Sounds like you've been ready for college. All that determination is going to be helpful, especially in the design program.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that you didn't have a good time in high school. It's really great that you have continued to be positive, though. I'm sure that will translate to success in whatever it is you want to do.
ReplyDeleteI know how hard it is to ignore what other people think. All your hard work ended up paying off so you should feel great about it.
ReplyDeleteBeing able to not let what others are saying about you, bother you is like one of the hardest things to do. You having already figured out how to handle people talking about you is great you are ahead of most people.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand when you say you were thrilled to know that you will never have to see the people you graduated with if you don't want to. It is awesome how you can take their put downs and let them fuel your fire to succeed. Great job Laura, keep being the way you are!
ReplyDeleteFirst off congratulations on all your scholarships. I know how you feel between getting out of school and scholarships, but I'm pretty sure you were probably more organized i am.I also love the fact that you work harder and it motivates you when people try to bring you down.
ReplyDeleteIt does feel great when you get out of High School. People in my school told me I couldn't make it at ISU and look where I am now. You have a lot of self motivation which is needed to get any thing done. Keep up the good attitude and don't let "The Man" bring you down.
