Coming from a small town where everyone knows you and your family for years, then comes college where you may only know a hand full of people for your high school. I will admit that it was a little bit of an adjustment for me because I always saw someone I know one way or another. Also leaving my teachers, who I have known for what seems like centuries, that I have developed great relationships with. But being in college for only three months I have found out that I still can develop relationships with my teachers to, who knows they might help me get my “dream” job when I graduate.
When coming to college I know right way who I want to have on my side for my major because I already knew someone who has gone through the program and is working in New York City after graduating this summer. She told me what advisor to “suck up” to and when to take certain class. So I have alright has a mentor to help me out in college even before it began. I hope to maintain contact with her because in my particulate field, fashion, it is all about networking hands down.
Besides knowing someone who has gone through my program, I starting to get to know my advisor, Michele Lee, who is an amazing person. Even though she will be my advisor for a year I don’t see that harm in not getting to know here because I still need to pay for college and when I need a recommendation she will be the first person I go to. Plus, if I get to know her, she will be more likely to tell the other advisors, especially the one that can get me the good internships, good things about me. I always a positive to have your advisors put a face to a name when a recruiter for a designer or magazine wants to know who they should pay special attention to because that could make or break you getting a dream internship or first job.
In anyone chosen major networking is always key. And when you find out who will help you get the job of your dreams or give you a little extra help in classes and developing a relationship with the person(s) can be priceless. You never know who is going to help you in live without getting to know who they are first.

Peers are often the best kind of mentors because they can relate more closely to what you're going through, you are lucky to have one
ReplyDeleteIts so great that you have a mentor who has recently graduated. She will be a great asset because she will reach a higher position about the time you graduate and can help you get a job. She will have made a lot of contacts and could possibly pull strings for you. Your right, in your profession it really is who you know.
ReplyDeleteYou made an excellent point when you said that you never know who is going to help you in life without knowing them first. Many of your professors could change the path you decide to take in life, so knowing them can be a big help.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you understand well who to get in with and how to do that. I'm sure that will translate into success in the future.
ReplyDeleteI definately know what your talking about when you we're talking about coming from a small town. Good luck in fashion, I just wear jeans and a t-shirt!
